How Expanse compares

Spreadsheets, reimagined.

Microsoft Excel

Locks you to one OS, one file format, one vendor.

Expanse: Runs anywhere — your laptop, your cloud, air-gapped.

Google Sheets

Caps rows, no Python, no SQL, no real local-first option.

Expanse: Billions of rows, Python + SQL in cells, native desktop.

Row Zero

AWS-only SaaS. Your workbook lives in their cloud.

Expanse: Local-first desktop. Hosted is optional, never required.

Built on

Standing on the shoulders of giants.

Expanse exists because of the work of these projects. We owe them — and where it makes sense, we contribute back.

Questions

The things people actually ask.

Is the desktop app really free?
Yes. Download it, run it on your laptop, edit workbooks locally — no account, no telemetry, no subscription. Bring your own LLM API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral — any provider) if you want AI in cells; you pay the provider directly and we don't see your data. The paid plans only exist for people who want hosted multi-user collaboration, cloud compute, or bundled AI credits.
Is Expanse open source?
The desktop UI is open source under AGPL-3.0 — you can audit it, build it yourself, and contribute. The evaluation engine (formulas, incremental compute, columnar storage) is proprietary. This is the same open-core model that companies like GitLab, Sentry, and Plausible use: the part you interact with is open, the engine that makes it possible is how we fund the work.
What does "AI at +5%" actually mean?
We route AI calls through Cloudflare's AI Gateway — one layer in front of OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, and every other major LLM provider. You pick the model (and can switch any time, even mid-workbook). The gateway gives us a metered, auditable cost per request, which we pass on at a 5% markup — enough to cover reconciliation drift and operational overhead, not a margin lever. If you'd rather not pay anything extra, bring your own API key on the Desktop tier and pay the provider directly.
What happens if I blow through the AI credit?
You'll see usage in the customer portal and can set a spend cap. By default we pause AI requests instead of producing a surprise bill — you choose when to top up. Nobody gets a $500 invoice they didn't expect.
Cloud compute — what's the catch?
Personal includes enough compute for normal interactive Python use — running notebooks, processing imports, simple batch jobs. Business adds larger instance sizes and a generous per-seat pool. Heavy or sustained workloads above the included pool meter at provider list +10%. You'll always see what you're using before it bills.
Can I move between the desktop and hosted?
Yes. Workbooks are .xlsx files (or our own SQLite-backed snapshot format). Open one on your laptop, upload to hosted, edit collaboratively, download again — same file the whole way through. No lock-in.
